Grab hire across Walsall & the West Midlands.

Same-day and next-day grab hire from our Walsall yard. Six-wheel and eight-wheel grab lorries for builders, groundworkers, landscapers, developers and homeowners. Anything from a single driveway dig-out to ongoing muck-away on a housing development. Fixed price, licensed disposal, full paperwork.

What it is

One of the quickest ways to get muck off site

Grab hire removes large quantities of soil, hardcore, concrete and construction waste in a single visit. A grab lorry combines a tipper body with a hydraulic grab arm mounted behind the cab. The driver loads the material straight into the vehicle using a clamshell bucket. No manual loading, no chain of skips, no permit.

  • One load replaces three or four skipsA single 8-wheeler lifts what would otherwise take three or four 8-yard skips. Most collections are finished in under 30 minutes once on site.
  • Used across groundworks, driveways, civils & demolitionFoundations, driveway replacements, landscaping, site strip-outs, demolition clearance, utility works. Wherever loose inert material needs lifting.
  • Backload aggregate on the returnTip the spoil, load recycled Type 1, road planings or grano dust from our Walsall yard, drop it on the way back. One mobilisation, two jobs done.

Grab hire vs skip hire

When is grab hire the better call?

Most customers compare grab hire against skip hire before booking. The right answer depends on the job. Here's the honest split.

Grab hire

Better when the dig is already piled up.

  • Driver loads the material for you
  • Usually no road permit required
  • Removes large volumes quickly
  • Ideal for soil, hardcore and excavation waste
  • Site cleared in a single visit

Skip hire

Better when waste builds up over days.

  • Customer loads the waste
  • Permit may be required on the highway
  • Waste stays on site until collected
  • Better for gradual waste generation
  • Useful where access blocks a lorry

The fleet

How much can a grab lorry carry?

Two vehicles, picked to the access. The 8-wheeler is the workhorse and the most cost-effective per tonne on any open site. The 6-wheeler turns inside a smaller envelope for narrow lanes, mews and suspect surfaces.

16t payload · 8–10m³

8-wheel grab lorry

Our standard vehicle for most commercial projects: housing developments, groundworks, bulk muck-away, site clearances. The most cost-effective option for any open-access job.

  • Payload Up to 16 tonnes
  • Body ~8–10m³
  • Reach Up to 6m from side
  • Best for Larger jobs & civils
10t payload · 5–6m³

6-wheel grab lorry

Used where access is restricted: driveways, garden projects, city-centre sites, smaller developments. Narrower turning circle, lighter footprint.

  • Payload Up to 10 tonnes
  • Body ~5–6m³
  • Reach Up to 6m from side
  • Best for Narrow access & residential

Common projects

What we're booked on every week

Most of the diary runs on repeat-trade. The rest is single-load domestic and landscaping work, on the same pricing and same paperwork.

Access

Five questions before we confirm a booking

Most grab issues come down to access. The wrong call is the one that ends with an 8-wheeler reversing back out of a cul-de-sac because the customer "thought it would fit". We ask the right questions on the phone.

  • Width restrictionsAnything under approximately 2.5m wide may need the 6-wheel vehicle.
  • Overhead obstructionsTrees, power lines and roofs can restrict grab operation.
  • Surface conditionsSoft ground, decorative paving and suspended slabs should be highlighted before arrival.
  • Distance to materialThe grab normally reaches up to 6m from the side of the vehicle.
  • Site locationPostcode and site photos let us assess access before confirming the booking.

Where required, we'll review access on Google Street View before attendance, and send a tracker over for free on anything we're unsure about.

Our trucks. Our drivers. Our depot. No brokered loads, no third-party comms chain.

Licensed waste carrier

Environment Agency Upper Tier registered. Waste Transfer Notes issued as standard.

Same-day availability

Most Black Country jobs can be attended same-day when booked before 11am.

Fixed-price quotations

Quoted price is what you pay. No weight surcharges, no creative line items.

Tipping tickets on request

Per-load weighbridge tickets and audit paperwork for civils and commercial accounts.

Pricing

£180–£280 inc. VAT per load. Fixed, all-in

Most grab hire jobs fall in this range. Three things move the final price: distance, material and notice. No hidden charges, no unexpected tipping fees.

Distance from Walsall

Walsall, Wednesbury, West Brom and Bilston are cheapest, because the lorry is back inside the hour. Coventry, Stafford and eastern Lichfield run higher because haulage takes longer.

Material & disposal route

Clean inert tips at the lowest gate fee. Mixed inert costs more. Anything with vegetation, plasterboard, plastic or timber jumps a tier, because it goes via a sorting transfer station first.

Vehicle size & notice

Scheduled work on the 8-wheeler is the standard rate. Same-day in peak hour, or jobs that need the 6-wheeler, carry a small premium.

Coverage

Grab hire across the West Midlands

Same-day collections inside the Black Country when booked before 11am. Scheduled work anywhere from Coventry to Cannock.

FAQs

Questions we get asked every week

How much does grab hire cost?

Most jobs range between £180 and £280 inc. VAT, depending on location, waste type and quantity. We quote a fixed all-in price including haulage, loading, tipping and Waste Transfer Note.

How many tonnes does a grab lorry hold?

An eight-wheel grab typically carries up to 16 tonnes, which is roughly 8–10m³ of loose soil or hardcore. A six-wheel vehicle typically carries around 10 tonnes.

Can a grab lorry reach over a wall?

Yes. The grab arm can usually reach up to 6 metres from the side of the vehicle, typically over a 1.8m fence or a low wall. The usual constraint is overhead trees, cables and conservatory roofs, not the wall itself.

Do I need a permit?

In most cases, no. The vehicle is loaded and removed during the same visit. If you're closing a road or operating in a controlled parking zone, additional notification may be needed. We'll advise when you book.

Can you remove soil?

Yes. Soil is one of the most common materials we collect. Topsoil, subsoil and clay all routed through licensed inert facilities.

Can you bring aggregates back on the return journey?

Yes, and this is often the cheapest way to manage a dig. We tip your muck-away at the licensed facility, then load recycled Type 1, road planings, grano dust or whatever you've ordered straight onto the same lorry from our Walsall yard, and drop it on the way back.

Are you licensed?

Environment Agency Upper Tier Waste Carrier, FORS Silver, CHAS approved. £10m public liability, £10m employer's liability. Full paperwork pack issued on request before the first job runs.

How quickly can you attend?

Many jobs across Walsall and the Black Country can be attended the same day, subject to availability. Best booked before 11am. Scheduled work anywhere across the West Midlands within 24–48 hours.

Is grabaway the same as grab hire?

Yes. Grabaway, grab hire and grab lorry hire are all names for the same service: a tipper lorry fitted with a hydraulic grab arm that loads and removes inert waste in a single visit. "Grab and go" is the same thing, it describes the way the job runs, with the driver attending, loading and leaving on one trip rather than dropping a skip and coming back.

Do you offer same-day grab and go collections?

Same-day collections across the Black Country when booked before 11am, subject to availability. Scheduled work available throughout the West Midlands.

Where do you offer grabaway and grab lorry hire?

From our Walsall yard we cover the full West Midlands: Walsall, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Dudley, West Bromwich, Wednesbury, Smethwick, Bilston, Sutton Coldfield, Solihull, Coventry, Cannock, Lichfield, Tamworth and Stafford. Same-day grab hire is standard inside the Black Country, with scheduled grab lorry work across the wider area.
